Email configuration

If you host your email on my servers these are the settings and troubleshooting tips for making your email work. If followed properly your email will work. If you are unable to make it work after consulting this guide please feel free to call me for one on one support billed at your regularly hourly rate. I know that nobody likes to pay for support but the volume of calls otherwise requires it. Thank you for understanding.

Configuration

All examples below refer to example.com as the domain. Please replace this with your domain where appropriate. You need to be at your mail accounts configuration page to perform these steps. Here are two common ways to get there but Google is your friend if they don't work.

Relevant settings

Incoming Server: mail.example.com
Outgoing Server: mail.example.com
Username: Full email address (e.g. michael@example.com)
Password: You should know

Step by Step

In the tradition of open source I see no good reason force yet another step by step guide on the unsuspecting public. Please use the following very well written links for your email setup and configuration while substituting the values with the ones provided above.

Troubleshooting

If you are using outlook and having trouble please consider deleting the account and creating a new one. Outlook frequently trips over itself for some reason.
If you can get mail but cant send mail at all your ISP probably blocks port 25. Please consider changing the port number to port 587 and see if that fixes your problem.
If you can get mail and send mail to others at your domain, but cant send mail to domains outside your own this is because you don't have SMTP authentication enabled on the mail account. Please make sure you enable this in your account settings for your outgoing server. IT uses the same user name and password as the incoming server. Please use this link to configure it properly.
Do not specify SSL or TLS for any of your authentication methods unless you know you have a certificate installed for your mail domain specifically. You most likely do not.
